Silver Fox Rabbit

By | Last Updated: 17th December 2019

The Silver Fox rabbit, famous for its ‘standing’ coat and gentle, docile personality, is a rare breed of large domestic rabbits produced by the North Canton-based breeder Walter B. Garland during the 1920s. A multi-purpose breed, the Silver Fox, is bred for its unique fur and as a show animal. It is likely that Walter Garland used Champagne D’Argents for their fur length and silver color  and crossed them with self-colored Checkered Giants for their large size and muscular body. The new rabbit breed was acknowledged and a working standard officially accepted by the American Rabbit Breeder’s Association in 1925. It was initially called American Heavyweight Silver, but its name was changed to Silver Fox in 1929.
