How does Cosequin work in cats

Glucosamine, one of the primary constituents of Cosequin, controls the production of collagen (a structural protein providing firmness, strength, and elasticity to bones and joints) in cartilage ^[2]. On the other hand, chondroitin prevents enzymes like metalloproteinase, cathepsin, and serine protease from degrading collagen and inducing destruction of joints and cartilages ^{[2, 10]}. These two ingredients play a major part in the synthesis of proteoglycans and glycoaminoglycans, the building blocks for cartilage formation ^[2].

Cosequin dosage: How much to give to cats

Follow the dosage as prescribed by your vet. It usually varies according to factors like the size, weight, and age of your cat, with the usually prescribed dosage being 1 capsule daily for cats below 10lb (5kg), and 2 capsules daily for cats over 10lb.

After the initial period of 4-6 weeks, if your cat feels better, your doctor might reduce the dosage to every alternate day for maintenance on a long-term basis ^[8].
